The Best Ebike You Can Ride Home Today

[ad_1]

There was a time when electric
bikes were a novelty, but they\’ve really
gone mainstream in a prominent footpath in the last few years. So-called bikes offer the best of both
worlds—you can pedal one like an everyday bike or use the electric motor to take
some of the burdens off your muscles. The least costly bike is relatively pricier than the cheapest standard bike, but once you get past that bit of
sticker shock, you can get an electric bike at almost every
conceivable price point. The most affordable models clock in at just under $1,000. But
the median ebike price is closer to about $4,000, and you can spend as much as
$10,000 on a compensation model if you\’re so motivated (I am not). In my opinion,
almost no one needs to spend anywhere close to that much on an e-bike, so let\’s look at the most innovative way to spend your cash on an e-bike.

You can spend up to $10,000 on an electric bike—but you don\’t have to. Here are the most innovative bikes you can buy today.

 GETTY

It\’s helpful to know that bikes
come in a few different tastes. Almost all of them offer Pedal Assist, helpfully abbreviated as PAS in online reviews and bicycle ads. In
PAS mode, the electric motor adds muscle while you\’re pedaling,
so you don\’t have to work as tricky as you would on a standard bike. That
means you go faster and distant for the same physical exertion, and you often
don\’t need to pedal as hard—which is especially handy for running up steep hills.
Some bikes also include a throttle; mash down on a little lever on the
handlebar, and your bike will take off like a rocket (okay, a small rocket)
without pedaling. That\’s an excellent quality, but using the throttle
chews through the battery faster than using PAS.

And bikes are grouped into three
classes. Class 1 bikes are PAS-only and generally have a top speed of 20 mph.
Class 2 bikes have PAS and throttle and top out at 20 mph. But
Class 3 bikes are for speed demons: They can accelerate you to 28 mph with PAS.
That said, if a Class 3 bike has a throttle (weirdly, it\’s optional, so not all
Class 3 bikes come with one), that\’s usually limited to 20 mph in the name of
security.
